Because Observing Isn’t Enough

Our program is geared towards veterinary students and novice veterinarians who are interested in General Practice or Emergency medicine.   We teach you how to apply your knowledge, treat cases, and how to conquer the real-world challenges of being a veterinarian. By the end of our program, you will be a comfortable, confident, and highly sought-after veterinarian. 

About our Program

-Your program starts with a 6 week orientation that exposes you to all areas of our hospital and our equipment.  This orientation also includes 25+ hours of continuing education on relevant topics.  

-After orientation you will work 15 shifts/month in our hospital 

-You will treat incoming urgent cares and true emergencies 

-You will manage hospitalized patients 

-You will see your own GP appointments 

-You will join weekly topic rounds, intermittent rounds with specialists, and occasional wet labs 

-You will be paired with a mentor whom you meet with monthly 

-You will participate in quarterly check-ins as well as biannual reviews 

-You will spend 1 month at Wolf Trap Rescue learning HQHV spay-neuter techniques 

-You will assist in and then be the primary surgeon on a range of emergent procedures including exploratory laparotomies, splenectomies, cystotomies, wound management, etc  

-We want you to take ownership of your cases and you have primary communication with your clients, but the staff doctors will supervise, mentor, and support you through your journey 

HYBRID INTERNSHIP 

The best of both worlds 

We now offer a joint program with Wolf Trap Animal Rescue. This program is ideal for those who are interested in shelter/rescue work, enjoy participating in spay/neuter trips, or want to improve their surgical skills for a GP or ER career.  

You will spend 6 months in our VetReady program at Columbia Pike working in GP, Emergency, and Surgery. Please refer to our Internship program page for more information on this part of your experience 

You will also spend 6 months at Wolf Trap Animal Rescue, located in nearby Merrifield VA. During this time, you will perform over 600+ surgeries under direct mentorship from specialty trained HQHV surgeon, Dr. Amber Burton. 

You will also become familiar with  infectious disease management within a foster-based program as well as gold-standard animal welfare transport & adoption protocols. You are also offered the unique opportunity to participate in any Wolf Trap events with national sports teams or celebrity artists.
