Discover Your Potential
You deserve dedicated and focused mentorship.
Because Observing Isn’t Enough
We built Vet Ready because students are expected to jump from learning and observing straight into practicing medicine. Thus, creating a gap between theory and practice. We teach you how to apply your knowledge, treat cases, and how to conquer the real-world challenges of being a veterinarian. By the end of our program, you will be a comfortable, confident, and highly sought-after veterinarian.
About our Mentorship Program
Our mentorship program is geared towards veterinary students and novice veterinarians who are looking for a year of primary case responsibility along with education, support, and guidance; before joining general practice or emergency veterinary medicine. We offer the support of an internship program with the salary/benefits of a mentorship program! We are looking for applicants who are motivated, eager to learn, and have strong communication skills.
Your Schedule
Mentees work fifteen 12-hour shifts a month, with up to 33% overnight shifts (10 pm-10 am). During your emergency shifts, you will see walk-in urgent care cases and true emergencies. You will also oversee hospitalized and postoperative patients. During your general practice shifts, you will see scheduled appointments. During your surgery days you will work with a staff doctor on their routine surgeries such as COHATS, mass removals, cystotomies, orthopedic procedures, etc.
Your Education
Your program will start with a 6 week orientation that incorporates a review of our mentee handbook, hospital practices modules, daily classroom educational time, and time working “on the floor.” For the rest of our program, along with daily hands on experiences, our mentees have a written professional development plan which includes weekly didactic rounds, monthly check-ins, journal club, morbidity and mortality rounds, wet labs, rescue spay/neuter days, and 2 weeks for externships at locations of your choice. You will have a formal review quarterly. We pair our mentees with a professional mentor whom you meet with monthly and have quarterly meals with. Finally, we offer our mentees a generous CE allowance and time off for a meeting of their choice.
Your Surgical Experience
We provide our mentees with a lot of surgical and procedural experience. You will be working with our surgery team on routine surgeries and dentals once a month. You will also be performing urgent surgeries that include abdominal exploratories, cystotomies, GDV’s, wound management, and hemoabdomens with the assistance of our staff emergency doctors. Our mentees each perform an average of 17 major surgeries over the course of the year.
We recently formed a relationship with Wolf Trap Animal Rescue in nearby Fairfax, VA. Wolf Trap Animal Rescue was founded and is run by shelter medicine & spay-neuter expert, Dr. Amber Burton. Each mentee will spend 1 month at the rescue’s full-service Veterinary Hospital learning how to perform HQHVSN under her guidance and will have the opportunity to perform up to 120+ spay/neuters during that time. Mentees will also help with animal intake medical exams, seeing Wolf Trap adoptees for wellness visits, and possibly assisting at rescue fundraising or adoption events. This is a unique experience that we are excited to now offer!
Premium Guidance
We want you to take ownership of your cases and you have primary communication with your clients, but the staff doctors will supervise, mentor, and are always available for questions and guidance.
